Hutch with a variety of cheese.

Cheese is solid food made by coagulating the milk from an animal such as a cow, goat, sheep, water buffalo, deer, or camel. Cheese, often enjoyed with crackers, plays an integral role in the Wallace & Gromit series. It is Wallace's favourite food (especially Wensleydale), and he is something of a connoisseur of the dairy dish. He can be seen reading Cheese Holidays and Cheese Monthly in A Grand Day Out. He likes to watch The Cheese Files in Cracking Contraptions "The Tellyscope" and live churning from Wensleydale in A Grand Night In: The Story of Aardman, and also tunes into CNN (Cheese Network News) in Anoraknophobia. He also makes his own through a ferment your own cheese kit in Crackers in Space. It even influences his decision to go somewhere cheese-related in A Grand Day Out (considering Lancashire, Cheddar, Wensleydale, Philadelphia and Tesco's before landing on The Moon), and gives him dietary struggles in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, whilst also reviving him through the usage of Stinking Bishop like smelling salts. Additionally, an excess amount caused him to have trouble falling asleep in the Cracking Contraptions "The Snoozatron" short film.

Hutch, a rabbit clone of Wallace that was created due to an accident with the Mind-o-Matic, is also a lover of cheese instead of vegetables like other rabbits, eating it throughout the film. Gromit is also shown to have a familiarity with cheese in A Grand Day Out, albeit not for Stinking Archbishop, as seen in the Wallace & Gromit's World of Invention episode "Come to Your Senses". He is seen consuming Wensleydale in both Wallace & Gromit and the Lost Slipper and The Curse of the Ramsbottoms. Shaun eats Wallace's cheese throughout A Close Shave and Cracking Contraptions "Shopper 13", much to the latter's annoyance. Wendolene, meanwhile, openly admits she can't stand the food as it brings her out in a rash.

Wallace has not been depicted consuming cheese since The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, possibly due to him ultimately following Gromit's diet plan. However, his affinity for the dairy product has not wavered, as he still dreams of cheese in A Matter of Loaf and Death, and the password on his computer in Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is "CHEESE", in which he also has a folder entitled "Cheese Pics".

Cheese knife[]

A cheese knife can be seen several times throughout the series. It is first seen in the intro to A Close Shave, near cheese and crackers next to Wallace sleeping in his bed and then hitting the floor in between his slippers as the title appears.

It can next be seen as one of the knifes Gromit hovers over in picking in the first morning scene of Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

In the Wallace & Gromit's World of Invention episode "Come to Your Senses", Wallace actually uses a cheese knife to cut a piece off of the Stinking Archbishop. He offers it to Gromit, who faints from the smell, and then eats it himself off of the knife. As the episode ends, he continues using it to eat the cheese.

In the climax of Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Feathers McGraw uses a cheese knife to separate the rope between the canal boats in an attempt to escape the duo.

Trivia[]

  • The video "What would be on your cheese board?"[1] on the Wallace & Gromit YouTube channel additionally mentions a stronger selection of Somerset's cheddars and the spicy Mexicana cheese.
  • The Shaun the Sheep spin-off additionally features cheese pizza.
  • The Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit books "HOW GREEEN WAS MY CHEESE", "EAST OF EDAM" and "SWISS CHEESE FAMILY ROBINSON" make a cameo in the cinematics of Chicken Run: Eggstraction (the former of which is pulled to activate a revolving area to reveal Feathers on the other side with a picture featuring Piella) alongside a unique book with "THE MOON", "CHEESE?", an image of the moon and an image of Wallace on its spine.
